Brief Introduction and history

The word Artificial Intelligence is self-explanatory. A machine capable of thinking and making decisions can be called an AI. Just like humans have “intelligence”, an AI will have “machine intelligence”.

The concept of AI and robots has existed since ancient times. The most famous ancient AI or robot is Talos. Though there are many stories of him, one says that Talos was a bronze man built by the god, Hephaestus. This robot was to guard Europa against invaders. Today, something like Talos might not be far from reality. AI is the future of humanity.

There are three stages or phases of AI: Narrow AI, Artificial General Intelligence and Artificial Super Intelligence.

Narrow AI

Narrow AI, also known as “weak AI”, specializes in performing only one type of task. Narrow AI are not capable of thinking. This is currently the most common and widely used AI. Common examples of this AI are Siri, Alexa. Sophia the robot is also a Narrow AI.

Another great example of this type of AI is “Deep Blue”. Deep Blue was a chess-playing computer that beat reigning chess world champion in a series of chess matches played between 1996 and 1997. Deep Blue is not capable of thinking and is programmed to only analyze and provide the best chess moves.

Artificial General Intelligence

Artificial General Intelligence or AGI is an AI that will be coming in the next few decades. The AGI will be capable of thinking and making decisions just like a human. It will be capable of performing all human tasks. Currently, no such AI exists. This type of AI may be invented around 2045.

But how will we create an AI as intelligent as a human? One popular approach is to literally copy paste a human brain into a computer. This process is called brain uploading or brain emulation.

Artificial Super Intelligence

An Artificial Super Intelligence, also known as Super AI or Strong AI is a hypothetical type of AI thousands of times more intelligent than humans. This kind of AI can be created when humans reach the point of technological singularity. The technological singularity is a point in time where technological growth is exponential in a short period of time. This AI will be god-like, may be capable of solving all of the world’s problems.

But, many feel that this kind of AI will mark the end of humanity if it’s “evil”. CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, and late scientist Dr. Stephen Hawking have expressed their concern multiple times in public.
