Jeff Bezos’s space exploration company Blue origin sues NASA for awarding the Lunar Lander deal to SpaceX. The company called the deal unfair.
NASA selected SpaceX to be the Sole supplier of the Human Landing System. This was a big shock for everyone. Due to funding shortcomings, everyone expected the deal would be awarded to two companies. Congress granted only $850m instead of $3.3bn requested for the project.
The Landing System is for the Artemis Program that aims to land humans on the Moon in 2024.
Blue Origin in Court
In a court filing, Blue Origin stated that it continues to believe that 2 providers are necessary to build the Lunar Lander. Blue Origin said, “This bid protest challenges NASA’s unlawful and improper evaluation of proposals”.
They further said, “We firmly believe that the issues identified in this procurement and its outcomes must be addressed to restore fairness, create competition and ensure a safe return to the Moon for America,”.
Why NASA chose SpaceX
SpaceX’s Bid was the lowest of them all. SpaceX also has a proven record of successful orbital mission both with and without NASA. SpaceX succeeded in transporting NASA astronauts to the ISS in May 2021. And, it has successfully done it for two more times. NASA is highly confident in Elon Musk and SpaceX’s abilities.
Jeff Bezos offered to cover $2bn of NASA’s costs to reconsider Blue Origin for the contract. However, NASA rejected the offer.
SpaceX and NASA, both are yet to comment on the lawsuit.
